The ideal applicant is someone who, in addition to superior academic performance, is highly motivated and demonstrates outstanding leadership in their community.
In memory of Richard R. Silver, son of immigrants and remarkable Mexican-American.
Richard Silver was born in 1917 in East Los Angeles California, the son of immigrants from Mexico City and La Paz, Mexico. He spent most of his youth and early adulthood in East Los Angeles which at that time could be a challenging place for Mexican and Hispanic heritage.
He was rich in his beliefs. Always saying you should be proud of who you are, no matter who you are or where you came from. He always told youth to do their best, question everything, and not to let others define them. Above all, he believed in education as a way to get more out of life, regardless of your background or economic circumstances.
Richard Silver was a lifelong volunteer. Even into his 80s, he volunteered to tutor Latino youth in his community. Always challenging them to work hard… and be the best they can be.
