Innovative solutions to address the housing crisis.
For over 30 years Hacienda has provided affordable housing to the communities that need it most. Hacienda’s design, development, and installation of Mass Casitas volumetric mass timber modular homes is among the first of its kind in the nation. Through this initiative, Hacienda continues a legacy of providing innovative and accessible solutions to meet the urgent housing needs in communities throughout Oregon.
Why Modular Housing?
affordable housing supply
pilot a solution that fills a supply gap amidst a high demand
high cost of building
lower-cost and faster implementation than conventional construction
rural development challenges
modular housing overcomes the barriers of rural locations and limited local workforce
emergency housing needs
responding to crises with quick deployment of housing that meets urgent needs
About Mass Casitas
-
Hacienda is building on over 30 years of commitment to Oregon’s housing needs. The goal of Mass Casitas is to pilot the manufacturing of mass timber modular housing solutions to address Oregon’s housing crisis. The use of mass timber modular construction allows for more affordable and sustainable housing options.
We will donate the first six homes to families through partnerships with four trusted local organizations throughout the state of Oregon which will allow us to provide homes to families and validate the material, design, and construction in different climate regions throughout the state.

Mass timber is an abundant, sustainable, and economically viable building material that can help to address the housing crisis. The use of mass timber allows for the construction of affordable, durable, and environmentally friendly buildings, while also supporting local economies and reducing the carbon footprint of the building industry.
Sustainability: Mass timber is a renewable resource and is considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly building materials available. The manufacturing process of mass timber requires less energy than traditional building materials such as concrete and steel, and it also sequesters carbon emissions which can help lower the carbon footprint of a building.
Strength and durability: Mass timber is strong, durable and fire-resistant which has most recently been used for load-bearing walls and columns in large-scale construction projects.
Speed and efficiency: Mass timber is prefabricated and can be assembled quickly on-site, which allows for faster construction times and fewer disruptions to the surrounding community. The fabrication process of mass timber is also more efficient and precise.
Environmentally conscious: By using the wood from sustainably managed forests, mass timber can sequester and store carbon for decades or even centuries, reducing the carbon footprint of a building.

The design, development, and installation of the Mass Casitas is being done in collaboration with a team of experts and constructed in Port of Portland’s Terminal 2 using volumetric mass timber modular construction, which is a unique and innovative building method that utilizes prefabricated wood modules to construct houses.
The cost of Mass Casitas will vary depending on the size and features of the unit. However, the use of mass timber modular construction allows for more affordable housing options compared to traditional construction methods.

Hacienda CDC is currently piloting the design, manufacturing, and implementation of prototype modular homes which will be transported to 6 trusted local organizations throughout the state of Oregon. Future information regarding the public availability of Mass Casitas will be updated on the Hacienda CDC website.
