Hacienda’s Connect Initiative
Bridging the digital divide
Hacienda CDC helps bridge the digital divide with laptop, wireless distribution and launch of remote learning program.
Hacienda’s Connect Initiative distributed 407 laptops and 407 MiFi internet hotspots to low-income families of color across Portland. Laptops and MiFi hotspots were funded by Verizon to help local families who currently have little-to-no access to technology gain needed access to work, school, and other online resources.
63% of families we serve in our affordable housing and programs are accessing the internet only through their smartphones. The Digital Initiative will support students accessing to school, people filling out a job application online, and small entrepreneurs managing their business.
Hacienda CDC in partnership with ChickTech through a remote program funded by Verizon are offering STEM-based classes to high schoolers to help them explore the new technology they received, as well as help new small business owners through the Portland Mercado boot camp program.
