Hacienda Youth Receive FREE Bikes! - 4/28/2010
75 Children from Low-income FamiliesLiving at Hacienda CDCHousing to Receive Bicycles and Safety Education
(Portland, OR) - On May 1st, the Community Cycling Center (CCC)will partner with Hacienda Community Development Corporation (Hacienda)to bring 75 lovingly refurbished bicycles, new helmets and bike safety education to resident children ages 3-8.
TheCCChas been working withHacienda as part of their Understanding Barriers to Bicycling Project, reconcnizing the need for additional options for residents to access safe and healthy transportation. "Bikes for Kids" is a pilot program of the CCCaimed at helping low-income families of color gain access to healthy, active transportation.
All bicycles for "Bikes for Kids" have been generously donated by community members, affiliates of the Commnity Cycling Centerand at bike collectiondrivesaround the Portland Metro area.
On the day of the event, a team of 40 volunteersspeaking Somali, Spanish, and English, including 11 Hacienda CDC staff and3 Board Members, will walk children through a pathway to their new bike. Community Cycling Center volunteers will teach children and their families’ safety lessons including how to secure their helmets properly, use hand signals, and how to start, stop and steer their new bicycles with confidence.
This eventisan example of howHacienda's vibrant community is merging with the local community,promoting healthy living andbringing opportunity and hope to Hacienda youth.
